The Museum of London has that they plan to acquire one of Gareth Southgates now iconic suits as part of their permanent collection.

Southgates waistcoats have helped bring the three piece suit back into fashion; a trend that was started in 1666 by King Charles II, who was spotted in London by Samuel Pepys in what is now known as the first waistcoat.

The Three Lions manager and his dapper look have also seen the sales of waistcoats soar up and down the country as men are eager to replicate his look.

Many fans are preparing for Waistcoat Wednesday, which will see fans dress up in the England managers waistcoat to watch the national team take on Croatia in the world cup semi-final.

Marks & Spencer, which has been the official suit supplier to the England team since 2007, said demand for waistcoats has risen 35% thanks to what they say is the Gareth Southgate effect.

Beatrice Behlen, Museum of London Senior Fasion Curator said: Waistcoats were born in London in 1666, promoted by King Charles II. The new fashion soon spread and for at least 300 years a three piece suit soon formed a key part of every mans wardrobe.

Now Watford-born Gareth Southgate is reviving that London tradition and bringing waistcoats home to the forefront of fashion.

More: UK

The Museum of London has a large fashion collection with garments ranging from the 16th century to the present. Our earliest waistcoat dates from the late 17th century, our most recent from 2014.

This acquisition would be a fantastic addition to our holdings and would come at an exciting time for us while we build the London Collection as we plan the New Museum in West Smithfield.
