A petition trying to ban cats has been rejected by the government.

Parliament received a petition called Criminalise cat ownership in Sawtry, aimed at sparking a debate in the House of Commons.

The petition states: The innocent village of Sawtry, Cambridgeshire has, over the last couple of decades, seen a drastic influx of certain unwanted pests.

Im talking of course about cats. I would like to make illegal any ownership of the animals in the village so as they might eventually be eradicated.

The petition rejected this week due to the parliament not being able to take responsibility for it.

A spokesman said: This is a local issue, not something that the UK Government or Parliament could help with. You could raise this issue with a local councillor, who represents you.

Sawtry resident Donald Jenkins, 75, said he believes the petition is a good idea for the village and believes it should be pushed again for parliament.

Donald said: They are a nuisance and leave their faeces everywhere. They cant be controlled and they dont clean up after themselves.

To be honest we have eight dogs and my neighbours cat went missing and the first person they blamed was us.

He added: Our dogs wont cause trouble but the cats do. I very much believe in this petition.
