Taxpayers are reportedly set to pay £15,000 to cover the cost of police guarding the funeral of a burglar, who was stabbed to death.

Henry Vincent died last month after forcing his way into pensioner Richard Osborn-Brooks home.

He was stabbed by the 78-year-old, who was arrested at the scene but later released without charge.

Yesterday, during a £100,000 funeral for Vincent, police were called in to stand guard outside the church, and near the pensioners home.

A helicopter – costing £800 an hour – was also seen hovering over the procession.

In total, around 50 police officers patrolled outside the church.

Some were forced to tackle mourners of the burglar after groups began hurling rocks and eggs at journalists on the scene.

According to the Daily Mail, the police bill is expected to be as much as £15,000 for the afternoon.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said it was too early to say what the cost would be.

During the struggle, the 38-year-old intruder was stabbed in the upper body at the house in Hither Green, south east London. Vincent was taken to hospital but died at 3.37am. Mr Osborn-Brooks, who has been arrested and bailed over the killing, is believed to care for his wife who has dementia or is disabled. Vincent was being hunted by police when he died for another raid on a pensioner's home in Farningham, Kent. Police appealed in January to trace Vincent (releasing this picture) and another man, Bill Jeeves, over the theft in November last year.

An eyewitness at the scene told Metro.co.uk that the group were part of the funeral, and were throwing things at members of the press.

Despite fears that the funeral was planning on passing by, it steered clear.

The Metropolitan Police said the decision to send officers to the south-east London street was for community reassurance after reports that Vincents loved ones would march through the area in an act of defiance.
