A father who repeatedly stamped on his brother-in-laws head after a family party in a London church hall is facing years in jail.

Philip Dielhenn, 37, was celebrating his daughters 16th birthday at the St Barnabus Church hall in Woodford Green, when Paul Taylor gate-crashed the party.

The pair had a fight at the party and then Mr Taylor went to Pizza Hut, Snakes East Lane, followed by Dielhenn and a 16-year old boy, who cannot be named.

Disturbing CCTV footage showed Dielhenn punching Mr Taylor to the floor then repeatedly stamping on his helpless victims head in front of horrified witnesses who tried to wrestle him away.

Linda Strudwick, prosecuting at the Old Bailey, said: The assault was vicious and sustained and wholly one-sided, Mr Taylor being on the ground from the beginning with no ability to protect himself.

In such a rage was Mr Dielhenn that he returned and continued to kick and stomp on Mr Taylors face whilst Mr Taylor lay immobile on the floor.

Mr Taylor was taken to hospital suffering cuts and bruises to his face, a loss of sensation around his right eye socket, cheek and upper lip, and fractures to his cheek bone and upper jaw.

Dielhenn pleaded self-defence but an Old Bailey jury of six men and six women took less than an hour-and-a-half to find him guilty of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

There were shouts of thats wrong from supporters up in the public gallery above the dock when the judge remanded Dielhenn into custody.

The prosecutor told jurors Mr Taylor was not appearing as a witness because he has no memory of the beating and did not want to make a statement in the family matter.

Dielhenn, of Theydon Grove, Woodford Green, east London, denied causing grievous bodily harm with intent but was convicted by the jury, he claimed he was trying to defend himself.

He was remanded in custody ahead of sentencing on May 18.

The 16-year-old admitted unlawful wounding in connection with the same incident and was made subject to a youth referral order and supervision earlier this year.
