Armed robbers 'raid five star Paris hotel in £4.2m jewellery heist'

Armed robbers have raided a luxury five star hotel and allegedly come away with £4.2 million worth of jewellery.

French police say that a gang five armed robbers stormed the Ritz Hotel in Paris at 6.30pm local time.

The authorities said the came away with valuable goods, likely jewels, worth ‘an important sum’.

The French TV station BFM said that 4.7 million euros (£4.2 million) worth of jewels were taken.

A police official says that no one was injured in the heist.

Police arrested three of the gang at the world famous hotel in Place Vendome, but two robbers remain at large.

A major police hunt to find them is underway.

People inside the hotel feared it was a terrorist before it came clear it was a robbery.

The attackers then used axes to smash open reinforced glass cases containing jewellery, while filling bags,’ a source told the MailOnline.

‘As they tried to get away, police officers arrived, and three of the robbers were pulled to the ground and then arrested.

‘Two others got out the back door of the hotel, and were seen running away, and then getting on mopeds.’
