She is now being held over her video for Bos Omak (Look At Your Mother). The title is a pun on the Arabic term ‘kos omak’, a profanity that literally translates to ‘your mother’s vagina’.

In the video itself, which appeared online at the end of last month, Amer dances and makes what could be interpreted as suggestive gestures.

The singer denies any wrongdoing, but a judge in Egypt has just extended her detention.

Ahmed Mahran, the lawyer who filed a complaint against Amer to the state prosecutor, claimed that the relatively-little-known video was a ‘great risk’ to Egypt and represented ‘an attack on society’.

The head of the Egyptian Musicians Syndicate, Hany Shaker, also called Amer’s video ‘an insult to the Egyptian people’ and said he had cancelled the singer’s membership.

According to Youm7, Amer appeared before a judge in Giza on Thursday morning. The judge ordered that she continue to be remanded in custody.

The news site quoted the singer as telling the judge that there were no unacceptable words or phrases in the song – only those that are commonly used by Egyptians.

It comes after another singer, Shaimaa Ahmed, was sentenced to two years for inciting debauchery and publishing an indecent film. Her sentence was reduced to one year on Monday after an appeal.

Ahmed had suggestively eaten a banana while in her underwear in the video.

Another singer, Sherine Abdel Wahab, was also charged with ‘spreading provocative publicity’ after suggesting that drinking from the River Nile could make someone ill.
