Snow is on its way as Arctic blasts are set to hit the UK by the weekend.

Heavy winds and rain are coming and the temperature will plummet, forecasters have warned.

Britons have been told to expect a shock to the system as the mercury dips below freezing.

Snow is expected on higher grounds across Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland and temperatures will struggle to get into double figures.

Met Office forecaster Greg Dewhurst told Metro.co.uk: The winds are changing direction from westerly to northerly and so cold air will move in from the Arctic.

Temperatures in the last few weeks have been above average but by Friday we will see temperatures struggling.

Over night there will be frost and ice and there is a risk of snow showers in northern Scotland, the Pennines, north Wales and parts of Northern Ireland.

London saw a balmy 21C on Saturday as an estimated 700,000 took to the streets for the Peoples Vote march.

And only ten days ago, the east of England recorded a high of 27C.

However it will be a different story by this weekend with temperatures about 20C cooler. Overnight it will hit -3C across the UK.

Snow is unusual for this time of year, although there was a snowfall in parts of Scotland in 2012.

The Met Office added: It will be a bit of a shock to the system because its been fairly mild recently and there will be a considerable drop in temperature.

There will be no snow further south, but there will be a noticeable drop in temperature – perhaps as low as 8C or 9C – a big drop considering temperatures were as high as 21C in parts of the south over the weekend.

Temperatures will be below average – going from above average at the moment.

Mr Dewhurst added that it is unlikely any snow will settle, and that it is only likely to be showers.

Some places will see snow or sleet showers and some wont.
