Devastating pictures of a seal wounded and tangled in plastic on a Wales beach brings home the impact of waste in UK oceans.

In the photos taken in Pembrokeshire, south Wales, the young animal is practically strangled by the plastic netting.

It was wrapped so tightly around the seals neck that it had cut through its flesh.

Sharon Lawrence posted the heartbreaking pictures to the Pembrokeshire – I love it! Facebook page.

She wrote: We all love Pembrokeshire, but this is a reminder to always take your rubbish home with you.

Sharon said she spotted the animal struggling in discarded fishing nets near to Strumble Head, a rocky headland, at around 1.30pm on Friday.

The 47-year-old, from Fishguard, later wrote on Facebook: When I got home (as theres no mobile phone signal at Strumble) I got advice as to who to contact from the Strumble Head Seawatching Facebook page and rang the Sea Trust to inform them.

They said that they would pass on the information to their “seal guy” and hopefully get some help for him on the next low tide.

Sharon informed experts who assured her the seal would be helped at the next low tide (Picture: Sharon Lawrence)

It was heartbreaking to see the injuries that the plastic netting had caused. The poor seal kept raising his flipper to his neck – he must have been in a lot of pain.

It appeared that in this instance it was caused by some plastic fishing netting, but something like this can happen with all types of rubbish and plastic that is thrown away.

I hope that people are starting to realise the actual impact of these thoughtless acts.
