A man who stole a police uniform and bike during a burglary at a police station is now on the run pretending to be a cop.

Shortly after the crime was discovered on Thursday morning at Gipsy Hill Police Station in south London, the suspect was reported to be impersonating a police officer.

The man was reportedly wearing the stolen uniform while riding the police bike as he approached several motorists, who reported him after finding his behaviour suspicions.

Scotland Yard said enquiries are ongoing to establish exactly what was stolen and how he broke in, but it is believed a police uniform and police equipment were taken.

Some of the equipment, including a police pedal cycle and a utility belt have since been recovered.

A Scotland Yard spokeswoman said: The man had been asked to show his police ID but refused and became agitated, which made the informant suspicious and they decided to report the matter to police.

At this early stage in the investigation, it is believed this is linked to the burglary.
