London tube station renamed Gareth Southgate in honour of England captain

A London tube station has been renamed Gareth Southgate in honour of the man who very nearly brought football home.

The England team may not have won the tournament, but they did manage to unite the country during the World Cup and TfL are trying to keep the atmosphere alive.

Southgate station in Enfield, north London have gone to town in changing all the signage on the platforms and outside the station.

Even the outside signs have been transformed in tribute to the man (Picture: Reuters)

But it will only be there for 48 hours, in celebration of England getting to the semi-finals of the tournament since 1990.

Mark Wild, managing director of London Underground at Transport for London, said: The great performance of the England team this summer brought people of all ages together in celebration.

Were delighted to be able to show our appreciation to Gareth and the team by renaming the station in his honour.

Footie fans are being encouraged to come to the station and take a Southgate selfie to post on social media.

Gareth Southgate earned himself a reputation of a complete gentleman at the tournament after he was seen congratulating the opposition and comforting his players when they lost against Croatia.

He also brought waistcoats storming back into fashion after he was rarely seen in Russia without one.

The garment became so iconic that the Museum of London is now vying to add one of the iconic suits to their permanent collection.
