When are the local elections?

The local elections will be taking place on Thursday 3 May 2018 and voting will be open at polling stations across the country between 7am and 10pm.

What are you voting for?

The local elections arent quite the same as a general election, but they can be considered just as important as they can have a big impact on the way your local council is run.

There will also be six mayoral elections across the country including in places such as Lewisham, Tower Hamlets and Watford.

The local elections are broken down into wards that represent your specific area of the council.

Depending on the results of the elections, they could have an impact on the leading parties with many seats having the potential to change hands.

Am I eligible to vote?

First you will need to check if elections are being held in your area, which you can do by going to the Your Vote Matters website and entering your postcode.

If there is an election within your area then you will need to make sure that you are 18 or over at the time of voting, live England and are registered to vote.

Unlike general elections, EU citizens are allowed to vote in local election as long as they are living in the UK.

An easy way to know if you are registered is if you have received a polling card which gives you confirmation.

Alternatively you can contact your electoral registration office, which will usually be based within your local council.
